Located in the historic heart of Paris, the Church of Saint-Eustache has served as an important place of worship and civic life for centuries. Often referred to as “the royal parish”, the church has welcomed monarchs and ordinary Parisians alike, remaining one of the French capital’s most visited religious monuments to date.
In 2021, the World Monuments Fund launched a comprehensive programme aimed at enhancing the conservation and the overall visitor experience of the monument. Alongside restoration works to the Chapel of Saint Joseph, the initiative included the development of a new pathway route and interpretation strategy, as well as the adaptation of selected interior spaces to better support the church’s cultural and community activities.
In this context, MUEVO was commissioned to engineer, manufacture and install the bespoke interpretation structures that form part of the new visitor experience. Specifically, the project entailed the creation of a discreet family of display elements that coexist harmoniously with the church’s remarkable Gothic and Renaissance architecture.
The resulting intervention comprises a series of freestanding and suspended interpretation panels, orientation maps and wayfinding elements, all meticulously developed for the architectural interiors of Saint-Eustache. Combining extra-clear structural glass, solid beech timber, precision-machined brass components and custom-engineered steel supports, the installations provide visitors with historical interpretation while maintaining an intentionally restrained visual presence within the monument.
Although modest in scale, the project demanded high levels of precision, coordination and material detailing. More than fifty custom glass panels, over one hundred bespoke brass components and integrated lighting elements were carefully designed and fabricated to create a coherent visitor guidance system whose contemporary architectural language respectfully echoes the geometry, rhythm and materiality of the historic church.
