Assumption of the Virgin (École d’Avignon)

Louvre, Paris

In 2018, the Louvre Museum announced the acquisition of an exceptional version of the Assumption of the Virgin.

Three years later, MUEVO was selected to provide a special display case to appropriately present this masterpiece to the public.

Attributed to Josse Lieferinxe from the workshop of Jean Changenet, a famous yet mysterious painter of the Provence School, this high-quality art piece is thought to be the missing right panel of an altarpiece dedicated to the Life of the Virgin, of which the museum already owned the first two parts. Its front side depicts the biblical scene, while the back portrays St Yves against an ornate background.

On this occasion, our design team redeveloped the design of a heritage showcase into a new generation conservation grade case, integrated with a wooden table, with a full sliding podium and a pivot opening system.

The altarpiece is on display in Room 832 of the Louvre’s Painting Department in the Richelieu Wing.

Completion Date: 2021

Type: Permanent Collection

Exhibit Design: Établissement public du musée du Louvre
