MASTABA OF AKHETHOTEP
Description
In the age of the pyramids in Ancient Egypt, monumental tombs were reserved for privileged dignitaries with close ties to the Pharaoh, like the high figure of Akhethotep. Originating from the Old Kingdom, the Mastaba of Akhethotep is certainly one of the most emblematic works presented in the Louvre Museum’s Department of Egyptian Antiquities.
The preliminary works for this project started in late 2016, when the Louvre launched a campaign for the restoration of Akhothetep’s tomb. In 2020, MUEVO was called to assist with the implementation of the new museography in Rooms 333, 336 and 337 of the Egyptian Antiquities Department.
Apart from the construction of new and the restoration of existing display cases, the project also included the production of a special protection vitrine and appropriate lighting equipment for Akhothetep’s funerary chapel. This was the most laborious part of the project, as inserting our glasswork in the tomb structure proved to be a challenge on its own.
With MUEVO’s contributions, visitors now have the chance to enter and experience the funerary chapel of the mastaba, just as the beloved ones of the deceased did more than four thousand years ago.
